A session usually lasts 50 minutes. Frequency can vary but weekly sessions are recommended. Between sessions, clients are encouraged to think about issues raised and process what was discussed. At times, you may be asked to do something specific outside of the therapy sessions, such as recommended reading or keeping records. For the therapy to "work," you must be an active participant, both during and between the therapy sessions.
A number of benefits may be experienced by engaging in therapy. Often it is helpful just to know that someone wants to understand and listen. Counselling can provide a fresh perspective on a difficult problem or point you in the direction of potential solutions. The benefits you obtain from counselling depend on how well you use the process and put into practice what you discover.
It is not uncommon to come to therapy with some preconceived ideas of how you might measure improvement or have personal expectations. Often these change as therapy progresses. There are no quick fixes in therapy. It is important to find a therapist with whom you feel comfortable and this can take time. Second, and most importantly, allow yourself the time it takes to find the answer to this question.
